Assessment and Evaluation with Damian Cooper was the topic of the day at the SCCAO (Science Coordinators and Consultants Association of Ontario) conference today. The day before the beginning of the STAO conference is when science consultants from across Ontario gather and come to grips with important trends. Discussions revolved around the changing culture of science education and the need to assess and evaluate thinking skills along with content skills.

A coaching analogy works best when thinking about assessment and evaluation. Pre-assessment is the tryout, formative assessment is the practice and evaluation is the game. The teacher is the coach. Damian says "coaches don't yell out marks during a practice!"

The most difficult issue that was addressed was the perennial 'change' and 'time' issues that teachers face. More to come
