Google Science Fair 2013 Launches

Mer, 2013-01-30 17:00 -- Reni Barlow

On January 30, 2013, Google launched the third annual Google Science Fair. This online science competition is open to young people aged 13 to 18 from around the world - working as an individual or in a team. It offers young people the chance to explore an area of science that they're passionate about - and compete for prizes, scholarships and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

The competition is accepting entries until April 30 2013. In early June, 90 regional winners will be announced, representing the best projects from the Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa and Asia/Pacific. From this pool, 15 global finalists will be chosen in late June to go to Google headquarters in Mountain View, California, in September to present their projects in front of a panel of esteemed judges. From these 15 finalists, a winner in each age category (13-14, 15-16, 17-18), as well as a grand-prize winner, will be selected.

Prizes this year include scholarships from Google, a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Expeditions, an experience at Google, CERN or LEGO and a grant. In addition, this year a “Science in Action” prize, sponsored by Scientific American, will be awarded to a top science project that has shown positive, local community impact and the potential to scale in other parts of the world. The public will have the chance to vote for the most “Inspired Idea” and the winners’ school will be acknowledged with a “Celebrate the School” Award.

Canadian students entering the Google Science Fair are strongly encouraged to enter their project in their Regional Science Fair for an opportunity to win a trip to the 2013 Canada-Wide Science Fair - May 11-18 in Lethbridge, Alberta.
